Dan Riedel joins TPH Detroit coaching staff
Total Package Hockey is proud to announce that Dan Riedel has joined the TPH Detroit staff as a player development coach and mentor at the Center of Excellence.
Riedel has playing experience at the NAHL, USHL, NCAA, ECHL, IHL and CHL level. A Rochester Hills native, Riedel played for Ferris State University for two seasons following his NAHL/USHL junior career. He was named First Team All-CCHA in 2005-06.
Following his time in Big Rapids, he played professionally for five seasons before returning to his home state. Since, Riedel has worked as a scout for the USHL’s Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires and as head coach of the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies 16U team.
With OJG, he has found considerable coaching success – multiple National Championship tournament appearances, 29 players being selected in the USHL Draft, nine in the OHL Draft, and 18 players making Division 1 college commitments. Three have made USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program – Drew DeRidder, Josh Norris and Joey Cassetti – and two have been drafted by NHL organizations – Norris and Brandon Halverson.
“We are very excited to have Dan Riedel join our staff at the Center of Excellence in Detroit,” said Dwayne Norris, director of hockey for the Bloomfield-based school. “I have had the privilege of working with Dan in a youth hockey capacity, and seeing how he treats and helps his players, we know he will be a valuable asset for our student-athletes.”

Dalton Norris to play with NTDP; Thomas Stift also practicing in Plymouth
Total Package Hockey is proud to announce that Center of Excellence student-athlete Dalton Norris has been invited to practice with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, and will skate with the Under-18 Team in their game against the Muskegon Lumberjacks Thursday.
Norris, the younger brother of NTDP alum Josh Norris, is currently a defenseman with the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies 18U team. He is the son of Dwayne Norris, TPH Detroit’s director of hockey.
“The TPH team is super excited for Dalton, one of our new student-athletes at the TPH CoE in Bloomfield, Mich.,” said TPH CEO Nathan Bowen. “He’s been working incredibly hard both on and off the ice, and he’s getting a nice reward for it.”
Dalton Norris is working towards becoming the third sibling to play college hockey; Josh is a sophomore forward with the Michigan Wolverines, and Coale is also a sophomore forward with the Ferris State Bulldogs.
He’s not the only CoE student-athlete earning opportunities with the NTDP; Thomas Stift has been practicing with Team USA in Plymouth, as well.
Stift, a native of Chino Hills, Calif., has moved to Michigan to join the CoE and play for Belle Tire 16U.
He has skated with the NTDP numerous times over the last few weeks.

TPH CoE student-athlete Lane Hutson commits to Boston University
Total Package Hockey is proud to congratulate Lane Hutson on his commitment to Boston University.
Hutson, a 2004 birth-year defenseman, is a student-athlete at the TPH Center of Excellence in Bloomfield, Mich.
“Playing Division I college hockey has been a goal of mine since I started to play,” Hutson said in a MiHockey.com article. “I picked BU because of the combination of outstanding academics, tradition and the long history of developing excellent hockey players and moving them on to the next level; players like Charlie McAvoy, Clayton Keller, Brady Tkachuk and Jack Eichel to name a few. Go Terriers!”
Hutson is in the midst of his first school year with the Center of Excellence; he moved to West Bloomfield this year to attend the CoE and play for the Honeybaked ’04 team coached by TPH’s Jimmy McGroarty.
“Training at TPH and going to CoE for school these past few months has played a huge part in my development,” Hutson said. “Getting to train with some of my teammates and some opponents on a daily basis keeps me challenged on the ice. The coaching staff at TPH is some of the best I have worked with. The school part is great because I don’t have to worry about missing school due to travel for hockey and can work at my own pace.”
He is the third TPH CoE student-athlete in the 2004 class to commit to a NCAA D1 school this season, joining classmates and Honeybaked teammates Hunter Brzustewicz (committed to Michigan) and Rutger McGroarty (committed to Notre Dame).
Nine TPH players win International Silver Stick Finals bantam title
Total Package Hockey is proud to congratulate the nine #TPHTrained players and two coaches who won an International Silver Stick Finals championship in the bantam age group this past weekend with their Honeybaked ’04 team.
TPH’s Chazz Ursini, Dario Sacino, Lane Hutson, Rocco Stolz, PJ Forgione, Rutger McGroarty, Brandon Wolfenbarger, Hunter Brzustewicz and Samuel Haid all earned gold medals as Honeybaked beat the Buffalo Jr. Sabres in the Silver Stick championship game Sunday evening in Port Huron.

McGroarty was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after posting 17 goals and 15 assists in six games; he recorded six goals and two assists in the 8-2 victory in the final contest. Hutson joined him on the All-Tournament Team list, as well.
Two TPH coaches were behind the bench, as well – the Honeybaked squad is led by TPH Center of Excellence coach/mentors Jimmy McGroarty and Matt Larke.
Hutson family thriving at TPH Detroit Center of Excellence
BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP – There’s a new hockey family at the Total Package Hockey Center of Excellence in Metro Detroit, and they are certainly enjoying their stay.
The Hutson family moved from the Chicago area to West Bloomfield, Mich., so three of their four sons could start the 2018-19 hockey season and school year at the CoE in neighboring Bloomfield Township.
According to the Hutson family patriarch, it’s been worth re-locating Lane (2004 birth-year), Coale (’06) and Lars (’08) to Hockeytown.
“It was a no-brainer for our family to come and not only train with the best but also for the educational aspect of it and everything else,” Rob Hutson said.
“It was a pretty easy decision.”
Hutson, himself a former college hockey player at the University of Illinois-Chicago and professional for the Muskegon Fury of the old UHL, said his four sons are enjoying all the things the TPH CoE has to offer for growing student-athletes.
“They love it,” he said. “They love coming to school every day, they love getting on the ice every day, they love the kids that they are surrounded by. Overall, it’s a home run.”
That sentiment is backed up by Lane Hutson, oldest of the Hutson boys attending the hockey academy. Lane, fresh off of a Silver Stick title with his Honeybaked ’04 squad, says he’s been thoroughly enjoying his time at the CoE.
“It’s really fun,” Lane said. “Everyone here wants the same thing – they all want to play at a high level in hockey, and everyone works really hard here.”
The recent Boston University verbal commit said he appreciates the flexibility that the Edmentum online education program provides for a student-athlete juggling the demands of a AAA hockey schedule.
“It’s hard, but it’s a lot better than a brick-and-mortar school because you can go at your own pace,” Lane said. “That helps a lot. I get to choose when I do my school work and how much to do at certain times, so that makes it easier to manage things when I’m playing in tournaments or going to practice.”
Rob, reflecting on his own experiences, says the CoE compares to life at a NCAA Division 1 institution – he likes that the TPH structure provides tutors and resources, but also makes the student-athletes take responsibility in their own education.
“The online structure is preparing them for college, preparing them for things down the road. There is more than enough help if they run into a logjam, but overall, the academics are lights-out.
“It’s good, because you have to learn how to balance and manage your own schedule. When you’re on the online platform, you can rest when needed, but you also know that the work has to be done. As long as you stay on top of the work, you’re doing just fine in school.”
The Hutson family has also been impressed by the facilities at both the Detroit Skating Club and the Bloomfield Tennis and Fitness building that holds the TPH classrooms and 2SP, the CoE’s official training partner.
“The facility here at DSC is great, and the classroom being so close, it’s campus-like,” Rob said. “It’s college-like. It’s really convenient for the student-athletes, and they are first-class facilities both here at the rink and across the street at the classrooms and at 2SP.”
Seventeen TPH Detroit CoE student-athletes win HPHL titles
Total Package Hockey is proud to congratulate the 17 Center of Excellence student-athletes in Detroit who won High Performance Hockey League playoff championships in their respective age groups this past weekend.

13 #TPHTrained players selected in OHL Draft; nine from TPH OHL Cup team
Total Package Hockey is proud to congratulate and celebrate the 13 #TPHTrained players who were selected by Ontario Hockey League teams Saturday during the league’s annual OHL Priority Selection.
“Our TPH family is incredibly proud of these players for this outstanding recognition and opportunity,” said TPH owner Nathan Bowen. “The hard work is just beginning, but we know from their mindset and their character that they’re up to the challenge, and they will continue to make us proud at the next level – wherever that may be.”
Nine of the players who heard their names called were part of the TPH team that competed in the OHL Cup. Nearly half of the roster being selected in the OHL Draft just weeks after the event took place adds to the accomplishment list for the group, after they reached the quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament in March.
Meanwhile, five student-athletes from the TPH Detroit Center of Excellence were selected in the 2019 OHL draft, as well. Congrats to the following players:

Eight #TPHTrained players featured in ‘Michigan names to know’ list for OHL draft
Each spring, MiHockey produces a ‘Michigan names to know’ list for a particular birth-year heading into the OHL Priority Selection with the assistance and commentary of OHL scout Kevin Hess.
This year, eight of the players on the list are of the #TPHTrained variety.
Five attend the TPH Center of Excellence in Bloomfield, while three others competed for the TPH team at the recent OHL Cup.
TPH wishes these players, and the rest of the ’03 class, the best of luck heading into Saturday’s OHL draft.
Center of Excellence student-athletes
Ryan Humphrey (Honeybaked U16) – Smaller, highly skilled winger that plays with a bit of an edge. Shows no problem going to the tough areas. Good skater who has very good edge control. Does a good job of shifting his weight and changing speeds to gain time and space. Has a quick release, showing a good scoring touch. Sees the ice well and playing the puck possession style of game that teams crave.
NHL Player he reminds me of: Mitch Marner
Kevin Perrott (Oakland Jr. Grizzlies U15) – The most improved player I have watched this season, especially in terms of his skating. Protects the puck well. Good shot with a quick release. Plays a very unselfish game, doing what it takes for his team to win.
NHL Player he reminds me of: Tom Wilson
Eddie Shepler (Honeybaked U16) – Powerful skating forward who can play all three forward positions. Gets up to top speed quickly and plays with pace. Plays an honest 200-foot game. Competes at a high level. Heavy shot with a quick release.
NHL Player he reminds me of: Matthew Tkachuk
Nicholas Sofikitis (Compuware U16) – Puck-moving style defenseman that plays with some jam to his game. Competes at a high level. Has the skating and skill set to escape pressure. Makes strong outlets.
NHL Player he reminds me of: Torey Krug
Jack Stolicker (Compuware U16) – Good skating forward, with a powerful stride. Tough to contain once he gets going. Is good on the cycle, protecting the puck and getting it to the net. Possesses a heavy shot, with a quick release. Uses size and skill effectively to make plays on the rush and off the cycle.

OHL Cup participants
Gibson Homer (Fox Motors U16) – Athletic goaltender with a strong fundamental base. Moves well in and around his crease. Controls rebounds well. Plays a cool, calm game, with a quiet confidence.
NHL Player he reminds me of: Carey Price
Connor Miller (Honeybaked U15) – Good skater with good balance and knee bend that allows him to maintain a top speed for an extended period of time. Does a nice job of using his edge work and skill to create time and space off the rush. Has a scoring touch around the net. Can score goals in a variety of ways. Has a heavy shot, with a quick release that allows him to score from beyond the tops of the circles. Also has the skill and strength to score the gritty goals at the net front. Is learning to play on the defensive side of the puck and has shown improvement in this area as the season has progressed.
NHL Player he reminds me of: Blake Wheeler
Sutter Muzzatti (Meijer U15) – Raw prospect that has the physical tools to be an effective power forward at the next level. Has improved in almost every aspect of his game throughout the season. Competes at a high level, doing a good job of winning his 1-on-1 puck battles. Has a heavy shot with multiple release points. Has shown good touch from tops of the circles down. Has solid puck skills that have continued to evolve over the course of the year.

TPH Detroit’s Jack Stolicker shines at OHL Combine
This past weekend, Jack Stolicker represented TPH Detroit at the OHL Combine, an annual event that showcases top OHL Priority Selection-eligible players for scouts and teams.
Along with playing in scrimmages, players were put through on and off-ice testing, and there, Stolicker excelled in both.
The Compuware 16U forward ranked No. 3 among all forwards in both the off-ice and on-ice testing.
He also competed for Team Ekblad in the games, helping his squad win the 2019 OHL Combine Championship as a combination of game-play and physical testing.
“It was awesome,” Stolicker said. “I was able to get a better understanding of what it’s like to play juniors. The off-ice and on-ice testing was a blast – it was similar to what they do at the NHL Combine. It was awesome being able to work with other highly skilled players that I’ve only had the opportunity to play against, and it was great to learn from coaches and staff that work within the league.”
Stolicker now prepares to compete for Compuware in the 2019 USA Hockey National Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich., later this week.
He credits TPH and training partner 2SP in helping him prepare for big moments like these.
“TPH and 2SP both, they are always preparing us for moments like this – they help us become better athletes on and off the ice so that we can have success in whatever we’re doing.”
