25 TPH Trained Players Selected in 2018 USHL Draft

The 2018 USHL Draft was held on May 7-8, and the latest group of Total Package Hockey-trained players saw their names appear on the draft board during the two-day process.

Total Package Hockey is proud to announce that 25 TPH-trained players were selected by USHL franchises during the Phase 1 and Phase 2 drafts.

“The TPH family is tremendously proud of these players for this latest achievement,” said TPH CEO Nathan Bowen. “We are confident that due to their character and their work ethic that they’re up to the challenge, and they will continue to make us proud at the next level – wherever that may be.”

Four of those players come from the TPH Detroit Center of Excellence, which has now produced a total of 31 draft picks over the last three seasons. Every single player who has graduated from the CoE has played at the junior level.

“The TPH staff is incredibly proud of the student-athletes chosen in this week’s USHL Draft,” said Detroit CoE director of hockey Brandon Naurato. “The hard work put in by these guys have given them these opportunities, and we’re honored to be here to help them through it all. Kirsten Simms Commits to Wisconsin

She spent the 2017-18 season competing against players up to three years older.

Clearly, it wasn’t a problem.

Total Package Hockey is proud to congratulate Detroit Center of Excellence student-athlete Kirsten Simms on her commitment to the University of Wisconsin.

Simms, a 2004 birth-year player, spent the past season playing for the 16U Little Caesars girls’ team – her first year playing girls’ Tier 1 hockey. She played a significant role in the LC squad’s state championship and USA Hockey National Championships appearance.

She’s still a few years away from enrolling, but Simms said she can’t wait to officially become a Badger.

“I picked Wisconsin because I love the facilities, coaches, school, and culture,” Simms said. “Just everything about Wisconsin is right for me. Literally every time I’m there it feels like home and it feels best for me.”

Simms, the daughter of two educators, said college hockey has always been at the top of her list of hockey goals. She will certainly be eligible for enrollment at Wisconsin when the time comes – Simms maintains a 4.0 GPA despite a dedicated training regime on and off the ice.

“I’m so excited to get the chance to play Division 1 college hockey because it has been one of my biggest goals since I was 6 and, on top of it, Wisconsin is my dream school.”

She said she’s thankful of the help the Total Package Hockey staff during her growing hockey career.

“TPH has helped me reach this goal in many of ways,” Simms said. “First of all they have helped me with advancing my skill and teaching me so much that I know – especially my shot. I can even admit that my shot wasn’t very good before I started working with TPH.

“Not only have they helped me as player they have helped me as a person. TPH has done so much for me so far and I am continuing to train with TPH every day to help me reach my other future goals.”

Rutger McGroarty commits to Notre Dame

Total Package Hockey is proud to congratulate Rutger McGroarty on committing to Notre Dame.

One of the top players in the 2004 birth-year class, McGroarty announced today that he has verbally committed to Jeff Jackson and the Fighting Irish hockey program.

“There is just no other place like it – I feel like it’s a home,” McGroarty said in a story on MiHockey.com. “I talked with a bunch of the players and they didn’t have one negative thing to say about Notre Dame. The coaches are top notch with Coach Jackson, Coach Slaggert, and Coach Pooley.”

McGroarty, a student-athlete at the TPH Center of Excellence in Detroit, is a forward with the Honeybaked 14U team. He has helped his HB squad capture back-to-back Michigan Amateur Hockey Association state championships.

He has spent the last three school years at the CoE while also participating on other TPH programs.

“TPH has had such a big impact in my hockey game – skating every day with a bunch of high-end hockey players who all want to be successful in the game,” McGroarty said. “It’s hard not to get better when you’re competing with and against a bunch of kids like that.”

Considered one of the top defensemen in the 2004 birth-year class, Brzustewicz announced today that he has verbally committed to Mel Pearson and the Wolverines’ hockey program.

“I picked Michigan because it’s a great school and close to home,” Brzustewicz said in a MiHockey.com story. “When I asked people about Michigan, they say everything’s great, nothing bad about it. I just feel at home there and the coaches are awesome – real good guys.

“It’s been my dream school since I was little, when I first stepped onto the ice.”

A student-athlete at the TPH Center of Excellence in Detroit, Brzustewicz has spent the majority of his youth hockey career with Honeybaked, helping his HB squad to multiple state titles and an International Silver Stick championship.

He has spent two years with TPH-Detroit, and Brzustewicz said his experience on and off the ice has helped him develop both as a player and a person.

“I’ve been there for two years now, and TPH has helped me a lot because of all the great coaches there,” Brzustewicz said. “They help us become real men, not just kids, and on the hockey side, their skill work is unbelievable. My shot has improved a lot, my skills, everything all-around – hockey IQ, watching video every day, seeing those players do it, it just makes me want to do it too.”
